About Berwick-upon-Tweed
Berwick-upon-Tweed is the northernmost town in England located 5 minutes drive from the Scottish border. The town is only 45 minutes away from Edinburgh and Newcastle via a regular train service. The town itself is encircled by its Elizabethan Fortifications and the 11/2 mile walk around these walls where you will be treated to town and coastal views, and get a glimpse into the perilous past of the town.
Berwick was the focus of 300 years of border warfare, changing hands at least thirteen times between Scotland and England. The town also became the home of Britain’s first purpose-built army barracks, now the venue of the Berwick Museum and owned by English Heritage.
Other notable attractions in the town include the Town Hall, The Lowry Trail, Berwick Golf Club, The Maltings Theatre & Arts Centre and the Charter Market which operates each Wednesday and Saturday.
The area is also near Spittal beach and the Heritage Coastline, slightly further afield you can see majestic castles, enjoy many walks and cycle routes and of course the Cheviot Hills, renowned for their open spaces and breathtaking landscapes are within easy reach.

- Bamburgh Castle - Bamburgh Castle is probably the finest castle in England. It is perched on a basalt outcrop on the very edge of the North Sea at Bamburgh, Northumberland. It commands stunning views of the Farne Islands, Holy Island and land' ward to the Cheviot hills.
- Lindisfarne - The Holy Island - Lindisfarne is internationally famous both for its medieval religious heritage and also its more recent picturesque 16th century castle. These, together with most of the community, are located on the Southern part of the island - the main focus for tourists and holidaymakers. Many are also attracted by the peace and tranquility which pervades the Island and the remote Northern conservation area, with more than its fair share of quiet beaches and unique natural history.
- St Cuthberts Way - Walking Route - The St Cuthberts Way goes between Melrose, the location of St Cuthbert's early monastic life, to Lindisfarne (Holy Island), the area of St Cuthbert's later ministry and death.
- Berwick Upon Tweed Barracks - Here, you and your family can experience military life first hand. A visit to our 'Beat the Drum' exhibition at these 18th century barracks recreates the detail and tradition of days in the barrack room. See the museum dedicated to the 'Kings Own Scottish Borderers'
- Birdwatch Northumbria - Birdwatch Northumbria introduces the birds and wildlife of Northumberland and the North East.
- Alnwick Castle - To many people, their first sight of this glorious medieval castle can seem foreboding, and certainly its history lacks nothing in drama and intrigue. Some of you may recognise us as a film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket to Blackadder.
- Goswick Links Golf Course - Seven miles south of Berwick-upon-Tweed, this is a traditional links course which provides a strong test of your golfing skills. It is rarely badly affected by poor weather and is therefore playable throughout the whole year. During Winter, play is always to the full greens, from grass teeing grounds.
- Alnwick Garden - The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland is one of the most exciting contemporary gardens to be developed in the last century, a magical landscape created from a unique idea.
